New Year New Hopes

Just like you, we have high hopes for a year 2010 being a better year than the last one in more respects than one. Natural Clothing Company was not immune from retail troubles of 2009. Our beautiful town of Snohomish, Wa suffered quite a few losses as well. We moved, we tighten the belt, economized whatever we could and continue to do  everything possible to save you and us expenses (see below).

But being blessed by living in Pacific Northwest we also are enjoying special gifts - the first cherry blossoms in Seattle and excitement of Flower and Garden Show next week. As gardeners, we anticipate the spring with its joys and promises like a long lost family member. And we know that after thankless time of improving soil, working on drainage, mixing compost - rewards will come. The nature does responds and works with us if we only give her a chance. That's why growing our organic clothing business is so important to us as well - it's a chance to protect the environment a little bit more.

Thank You so much for caring about it and supporting organic lifestyle, not the chemical lifestyle, at any scale. Look around you and where you see the beauty of Nature - that is her thanks to you!

Green Fashion and community

Organic clothing and living sustainably while looking great was the focus of an eco friendly evening in the historic town of Snohomish, Washington. Natural Clothing Company hosted by Grilla Bites Cafe presented a selection of their organic clothing, made from organic fibers like hemp, organic cotton and bamboo. Green ideas were flowing also from other presenters: recycling and re-use ideas, darling children's wear from a local thrift store and handsome kitchen aprons made from recycled shirts.  The evening was filled with laughter and common interest in living eco-friendly while being in style and having fun.  Flavorful organic food, wine samples  and lively music created an unforgettable experience. Often if the item is very light or local, we manually reduce the cost of shipping on the order. FYI we use US Post Office for majority of the shipping for several reasons - smallest footprint: the Post Office already delivers mail to every single household in US, no extra trips created. Many of their trucks are hybrid, their packaging is Cradle to Cradle certified, they use soy ink for package printing. We think its worth supporting.

Gross National Happiness – Bhutan 

 

At last week’s Seattle Green Festival there was a wonderful presentation by Karma Tshiteem, Secretary of Bhutan Gross National Happiness Commission.  In Buthan the government measures the well being of their citizens not in Gross National Product but in Gross National Happiness. It includes prosperity as well as health, culture, education, spirituality and more, with its indicators. How often the citizens participate in cultural events, meditate, experience stress? To insure its people well being, the government policies have to increase, not decrease these indicators, creating base for more quality and happiness. For example, Bhutan has even banned plastic bags and tobacco on the grounds that they make the country less happy. . Bhutan is small and quite poor, fighting a lot of challenges but their people experience stability as they know that their leaders care, understand and act with people happiness in mind through visible, real methods. How about us? Mr. Tshiteem made also the presentation to the Seattle City Council, as we want Seattle to have similar program. Would your community benefit from it?

 Organic cotton is up!

A report from Organic Exchange Global shows that retail sales of organic cotton grew 35% to approx. $4.3 billion in 2009. All of that in a difficult times of slow economy and mostly from USA market. Thank You for supporting organic cotton, that is a huge leap. Wear your organic Tee with pride!

People often ask why is organic cotton more expensive if the cost of spraying chemicals is spared. Well, picture the planting field being prepared for conventional cotton; it is soaked with chemicals so it is “sterile” before anything gets planted, then seeded with insecticide soaked seeds, then sprayed with chemicals routinely through the growing season and hastened ripening. The protection from insects and pests still has to happen in organic fields. It is done mainly by hand and by continuously improving the soils in order to make both the soil and plants healthy and strong enough to fend off the problems. It requires a lot more care and man hours than flying a plane over the fields and poisoning it with toxins.

I’ve been shopping for rainbarrels to save water for our gardens. I keep thinking how much luxury it is comparing to Jambange people, where these barrels are often the main source of water, without which they would not survive.
