"I got my package and everything fits…good call on tee!!  I really like the mauve salal tank, too.  And thanks for the market bag…I will definitely use it!  I really like this one because it is large but lightweight.  I usually keep a canvas bag folded in the pocket of my diaper bag when I’m out shopping, but all of the bags I have now are bulky so this one will be perfect." "I love this company and their natural products ! just ordered yesterday pure cotton organic jeans, great !!! Look very chic and comfortable. As a customer and yoga teacher I support Natural Clothing Company at 100%. Please support organic and sustainable clothing. Do your part!" A.L.

Hello again!
organic clothing
It is quite a challenge for a small business like us to find the time for our most favorite thing: communicating with you! But...
Our big news this season is that we have opened a retail location in historic downtown Snohomish, WA and we would love for you to visit us! 1101 1st St, lower level, with beautiful views of the Snohomish River and a cup of organic tea or coffee waiting for you. Our hours are still a bit flexible so please, keep checking our website for current store hours, link NaturalClothingCompany.com/Sustainable_Snohomish. Also, if you have a particular item you saw on the website in mind – let us know, our stock varies a bit between the website and brick and mortar store.
Hope to see you there!

Olympic Peninsula Dams Reclaimed – Fish are Smiling
This is an amazing project – righting the wrongs of decades. Elwha and Glines Canyon dams in Pacific Peninsula are going down. Nature, Chinook salmon and other species will recover some of its territory! It s a largest removal project in U.S. history, which will reopen more than 70 miles of pristine spawning and rearing habitat. Salmon populations are predicted to swell from 3,000 to nearly 400,000 as all five species of Pacific salmon return to one of the Pacific Northwest's most productive salmon streams. The Elwha is the largest watershed in Olympic National Park, and the return of salmon to this ecosystem will return marine-derived nutrients to the watershed, restoring a vital food source for the range of life that inhabits it.  For the Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe, this project will bring cultural, spiritual and economic healing as salmon return after a century's absence and flooded sacred sites are restored.
Look at the breathtaking photographs of the area http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/picturethis/2016196757_elwha.html.

Inside Job, Occupy Together - is it worth support?

A friend passed this on:
Warren Buffett, in a recent interview with CNBC about the debt ceiling said: "I could end the deficit in 5 minutes. You just pass a law that says that anytime there is a deficit of more than 3% of GDP, all sitting members of Congress are ineligible for re-election".
He nailed it on the head: accountability. On one hand we have many sincere, smart people wanting to put this country together. On the other – some of the same guys who hastened the failure of our financial system, are being rewarded and are still passing our laws and regulations to the tune of multi-digit salaries. Watch the documentary film “Inside Job”. It is a good, systematic record, right on the money(!) of recent finance decline.
Your view of Occupy Movement might shift a little. Some of our own friends do not trust the occupy movement and criticize its shortcomings. Well, what is there to trust? It is a random section of the society; it is a voice of tired, disappointed people, demanding change. If one does not like what they see – join them and make it better! Speak the truth, don’t tolerate violence and we’ll all win.
The point is that we do have a voice and we do need to use it.
Again, from Warren Buffet: “Of the 27 amendments to the Constitution, seven took one year or less to become the law of the land - all because of public pressure.” It is up to us to put that pressure. It is NOT pointing fingers (as one of the “experts” called it).
Our favorite organization, Green America, stated: “The people raising their voice for a better way forward join a long-standing movement to change the way America does business. Since our founding, Green America has worked to stop corporate abuse and to hold irresponsible corporations accountable for their greed, for their environmental destruction, and for their exploitation of workers.”
Can it be done? I grew up in communist country. Not many dared to end the corrupt, unfair system. Several attempts failed. But when the economy fell flat on its face, when people decided that it is enough, they spoke. And when the shipyard workers went on strike, they faced jail or death. Then the coal miners joined, then the students joined, Solidarity movement was born. That is the only thing that broke the back of communism through the whole Eastern bloc. Solidarity. Don’t sneer at shortcomings of your fellows. Look for the truth and the rights. From London to Frankfurt to Madrid, Wall Street to Athens, people are taking to the streets. It can be done.

Co-op living in W. Seattle
Occupy SeattleSeattle is such an inspirational place to live. Look at this project: Puget Ridge, cohousing community unlike anything else. Houses clustered around common spaces, neighbors interacting with each other. Cars are kept underground or at the periphery so people can stroll, mingle and play on the central courtyards, paths or lawns. At a common house, residents come together to make decisions through consensus. It is not for everybody, for sure. But it is an ideal environment for many. For them, the arrangement encourages civility, communication and deeper, more meaningful relationships. It was built in 1994, 23 homes and cottages. Nobody has a yard of their own. Instead, stone walkways connect the courtyards and lawns so everyone can play. Native plants and trees shelter the neighborhood from the street and give Puget Ridge an earthy, Northwest-forest feel. It operates like a condominium complex and residents divide into committees to take care of the garden, tool shed, common house, lawns and other areas that need tending. They also assist with turning a historically agricultural parcel of land nearby into an edible plant park. Our Prices – too high? Too low?
The retail” experts” say that the current consumer cares only about the price right now. Boy do we understand! We are watching our expenses like a hawk, just like you. But… we have not raised any prices in four years and actually have cut the shipping cost to help our customers. We do not charge handling, even on international orders requiring custom forms. What we really want to say is:
“Thank You for staying with us! Thank you for supporting green life! Thank you about caring about how the products are made!"

For all our Facebook Fans and e-news subscribers  - you receive your offer via direct mail. Also, if you see a great idea for a gift for Christmas – you can purchase it now, we will ship on the date you specify. As always, gift wrapping and shipping is at no extra charge!

    Mother Earth

Mother EarthDoesn’t the Mother’s Day stir up all kind of emotions? Mother is an institution of so many dimensions that we are not even going to go much further on that.

But you might ponder on parallels between the relations we have as humanity with our ultimate Mother Earth and our personal family relations.
Loved or not, cherished or not, our ultimate survival and our circle of life depends on how we respect the Mothers. It is not always the easiest to find your own spot in that cycle but we owe them the reverence and love.

Happy Mother’s Day!

Fashion that stretches your imagination                                                                                                                                     that qqq organic fashion

We love fashion created not only as fun or art but also made by mixing medi ums and stretching our imagination  past what’s possible or imagined in a present.

Some intriguing projects we spotted thanks to Tree Hugger include: Yarn Bombing, from England and detailed, perishable sculptures and gowns by Canadian environmental artist Nicole Dextras. Her creations bow with elegance to the true source of our survival and our coverings- the Nature itself.

 What is a "drug"?

The media in our Washington State was all over Gov. Chris Gregoire's veto of a medical marijuana law and different aspects of it. As the parents of teenage boys, the mantra in our house is “don’t use drugs”, "don’t do drugs” and then “don’t do drugs”, again. Personally, we don’t use as a family even over the counter medical drugs, unless there is a true emergency. We look at amounts of antacids or anti-depressants or similiar drugs in this country as overused and abused.
hemp

So I looked again at my own personal definition of a “drug”. One story, on the radio last week, was from a parent of a toddler with life threatening tumor, who after two rounds of chemo, stem cells transplant and grueling procedures was not making it. The poor kid's ravished body was devastated not only by tumor but also by long list of medical drugs, which burnt his intestines and destroyed immune system. In desperation father tried on him THC oil, with miraculous results in a short time.

So – when is it a “drug” and when is it a “medical drug”? If you don’t administer “medicine” as a parent, you can go to jail. If you do administer THC you might, too. The words drug and medicine are synonyms in the dictionary. When the state law and federal law differ - what stand do you take? And even more, regardless of legal status, where are you going to put your confidence in when you have the life of your dependent on your hands?  Which one would you use if (knock on wood) circumstances required?  How far would you go to obey the law?

What do you think? We value your opinion and will print it in our online newsletter, let us know.

Happy Earth Day!

Earth Day in Snohomish, WA

Well, we are all worried about the future of our little green blue planet. It’s the only home we have and it is going through so many changes!

But on April 22nd, the Earth Day - let’s stop for a moment. Let's admire the absolute beauty, resourcefulness, sustenance of nature. With all the mess of being drilled and ripped and polluted – it’s the most beautiful place in our universe. It is vibrant, strong, resourceful, forgiving and adaptable. It will survive if we change our ways.

Let’s validate the groups, businesses and individuals, imperfect as they are, when they focus on promoting nature and its products. Let’s stop by their stores and say “Hi! Happy Earth Day! I am so glad that you are here”.

That’s what we do in Snohomish, WA, our little slice of heaven, as our local artist Tim Noah calls it. On April 22nd,our community shows off what IS being done to honor earth. We will raise funds for the Foundation for Sustainable Community, we will demonstrate how to set up a worm bin, prune the fruit trees or make a gluten free dirt cake. Then we’ll share a meal at Zero Waste pot luck and sing and play. If you can – join us! If it’s too far – turn to your closer neighbor and say “Hi. Happy Earth Day!”

Human RightsWater IS a Human Right

In July 2010 the United Nations (UN) agreed to a new resolution declaring the human right to “safe and clean drinking water and sanitation.” One hundred twenty-two nations voted in favor of the resolution; 41 (primarily developed) countries abstained; and there were zero “no” votes. [..]

A recent World Bank study predicted that demand for fresh water will exceed supply by some 40 percent within just two decades. While the UN resolution may not move any mountains, it is a step in the right direction for the world’s increasing number of have-nots.

My new pets

Earth Day in Snohomish, WAWith spring here and sun peeking through the clouds more and more often, it is a blessing to work outside. My deepest joy comes from working again in the garden and admiring the beautiful soils that our winter over crop helped create. With each scoop I see tons of worms crawling around.

Several years ago, these guys would give me shivers. Now, I feel like I see my favorite pets; I am so happy to see the soil live and strong, as I sense the whole underground communities hard at work in the dark, getting the place ready for planting. This year we are trying for the first time the bio-dynamic methods with help from Slow Turtle Seeds – we could not be more excited. With a help of wonderful “Organic Gardening Made Easy” DVDs of Master Gardner Lee O’Hara and advices of lifelong gardener grandma, we know – it will be a great year!

Polyester– eco friendly fiber?

nature's beauty

Possibly seeking controversy, Sarah Scaturro, textile conservator, claims to love polyester. She talks about different points of economy of production, care and wear. Freedom of speech, I figure...

The more I work with natural textiles, the more factors hidden from simple view emerge. It's rather like going for a nice mountain hike or maybe in the forest or simple back road. Can you recall this feeling? Your mind empties of constant reasoning, reaching for simpler and easier frame. Your heart sings "Ohhhh... I belong here".

Then you spot a piece of plastic bag stuck on a bush – and even before you even process it logically - every cell of the body instinctively recognizes the insult of un-organic matter that does not belong there, it will not decompose there and if not removed, it will be trash forever.  The process of recognizing what's right and what's wrong is intuitive. As long as we breathe, we belong with natural elements. Gratefully so.

It seems to me, that the more we moderate Nature, modify, "improve" materials without EVER working out how to de-compose them, how to reverse the process - we only fool ourselves, that's all. Does drilling a hole without plugging it, splitting an atom without knowing how to put one together or creating frankenstein seeds for GMO crops without ever being able to undo it, really make sense?

Whenever we do have a choice, please, let's put priority on nature's million years of experience first, our "great" ideas second.

Turn Off Your Lights - Earth Hour

Earth HourIn Green America's "10 Easiest Ways to Cut Your Energy Use in Half ", first tip is "Turn Off the Lights".
Simple, plain and something our mother already told us so. Mark your calendar for Saturday March 26 March at 8.30 PM (local time) for the EARTH HOUR. Earth Hour started in 2007 in Sydney,Australia with 2.2 million people turned their lights off to take a stand against climate change. Now, Earth Hour is a global sustainability movement with more than 128 countries participating in 2010. This year we want to actually go beyond one hour, to think about what else one can do to make a difference.

Your Daily Groove – Loving Fear

Recent years brought some changes that might create anxiety and concern for us. Here is a short note from Steve McAllister of Modern Hippie Magazine:

"There is so much of life that we shirk from out of fear. There is so much we avoid and turn away from. However, through the very practice of facing our fears, we not only find the ability to overcome them, but to realize that there was no need to fear them in the first place."   Oil from plastic bags

recyclingThis invention by Akinori Ito, CEO of Blest is quite incredible with its small size and features. You simply put plastic bags, packaging and basic plastic trash (items especially hard to recycle) into the machine and it turns it back into usable oil! It can transform a kilogram of plastic waste into a liter of oil, using little electricity without emitting CO2. The machine uses an electric heater instead of flames, processing anything from polyethylene or polystyrene to polypropylene (numbers 2-4).  Do watch the video   http://ourworld.unu.edu/en/plastic-to%20-oil-fantastic/. The company website shows specs for different sizes of equipment for both industrial and home uses.

If that works, we should have one in each neighborhood! Let us know what you think.

Eco Fashion

bamboo dressThe search for alternative fibers and textiles is going further than anybody imagined few years ago. Textiles are made from all kinds of different plants (and weeds like nettle), wood, even recycled pine, and some from unthinkable sources like milk protein. Is all of this innovation an actual progress? We don’t believe so – some pose more problems in manufacturing than value. But… we applaud the fact of trying to limit oil based textiles and that the search for better solutions is expanding, period.

Some of our products are made from bamboo and soy, both of which have pro and cons of manufacturing but…consider this. Bamboo grows faster than almost anything else, generates up to 35% more oxygen than equivalent stands of trees and all our bamboo used is grown organically. Soy fiber is made from otherwise unused byproducts of tofu and soy milk manufacturing, which is mass produced. But the icing on a cake is these textiles are luxuriously soft, naturally anti-bacterial and anti-static which means they drapes fabulously on body and look great! Try it out and see. http://www.naturalclothingcompany.com/bamboo_assymetry_dressIf you are a Facebook user – we have a $50 giveaway for people who Like us on our NaturalClothingCo page, find info at  http://www.facebook.com/NaturalClothingCo?v=app_4949752878

So shockingly wrong

organic environment“Every once in a while an issue comes along that is so shockingly wrong, that people seem to spontaneously unite in opposition. This is one of those times. I am very honored to post this letter, written by some of the most informed, passionate, and good-hearted people I know. Please, do what you can to fight against the GMO contamination of our bodies and our environment by demanding organic. Thank you. —Maria” [Rodale]

Many of us are dismayed and discouraged about recent USDA decision on GMO alfalfa. One might say it’s too late, all is rigged. Well, we have to keep speaking up. Because no matter what ridiculous and heavily influenced decisions our authorities make – it’s our food and food for our farm animals. It’s not OK to turn our population into a giant bio and gmo experiment.
Please read entire document below and write the White House your opinion, this link is easy to do. http://ota.capwiz.com/ota/issues/alert/?alertid=24747501

“We stand united in opposition to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) decision to once again allow unlimited, nationwide commercial planting of Monsanto’s genetically engineered (GE) Roundup Ready alfalfa, despite the many risks to organic and conventional farmers.” See the whole text signed by many people at http://www.mariasfarmcountrykitchen.com/we-stand-united-in-opposition-to-ge-alfalfa/

Let's have a great 2011!

crystal_ballAn interesting year has come. We hear that the downslide curve of economy turned up, so how come our lives don't seem much better? The words "green" and "alternate energy" flash everywhere but green businesses are struggling, some closing down.

Personally, we don't think there is going back. We are thrilled with more people becoming aware of climate changes, environmental decline and social injustice. From our tiny spot we will do everything we can to work harder than ever before, bring the highest value possible to our customers and support our community. According to a respectable Gallup poll, U.S. consumers have supreme confidence in small business (59%) over big business (19%).  We'd say "correctly so!" and are happy to be small. Happy 2011!

Plastic bags banned

hemp_grocery_bagItaly became the first European country without plastic bags, replacing it with biodegradable versions, since a ban on plastic bags went into place Jan 1. Stores in Italy, which uses 20 billion bags a year (one-fifth of all European use), will be able to give out their remaining plastic bags, but once they're gone, they can only offer paper, biodegradable. Way to go!!!

Grow food

organic_foodOK, it's simple. We LOVE food! Especially, real food - not the loaf of bread composed of 25 ingredients (half of which you cannot pronounce). The food that has a flavor and color and you know where it came from. The pleasure and satisfaction of growing your own food puts demand for public places – city parks or patches of land to turn into community gardens. Students benefit from keeping a small veggie patch by some schools. A great organization to follow for organic gardening is the Rodale Institute, which promotes organic and natural gardening since 1947. http://www.rodaleinstitute.org/demand_organic_about. Also don't forget about excellent little video available on our website "Organic Gardening Made Easy" which gives you great tips on how to get started yourself. http://www.naturalclothingcompany.com/organic_gardening_dvd

Discounts

We really appreciate your support. The main currents of textile industry are not (and probably will not be for a long time) geared toward organically grown cotton, finishing their fabrics naturally or eliminating sweat shops. There is no increased profit for them. But there is future for us,our kids and the planet. So please, keep supporting smaller, hard trying businesses, organic farmers and honest manufacturing.
